Redskins Draft Recap by Pick: David Amerson & Jordan Reed

Grading draft picks this early seems tedious and unnecessary. Most believe you can not grade a draft until 3 years later. So, I will not be grading these picks but instead provide initial reactions to each pick starting with David Amerson and Jordan Reed.

Round 2 (51st Overall): David Amerson CB - This pick seems to be the one causing the most controversy. Some say it is a risky pick and a reach, while others say that it was a great value pick.  This is because Amerson had a great 2011 season recording 11 INTs and then had a very poor season with some awful tape in 2012. His weakness being that he took too many chances which caused him to give up too many plays. Amerson came out and admit that he became too greedy in 2012 and
always going for the INT. It is good that he at least recognizes this as an area of weakness.

I believe the redskins would not have drafted Amerson this high if they did not have a plan for him. My first thought is that having him and Hall on the field is a little bit scary considering their propensity for giving up big plays. However, with a Raheem Morris as a Secondary coach I will give the Redskins the benefit of the doubt in this case.

Round 3 (85th Overall): Jordan Reed TE - Another pick that caused some controversy. At the time of the pick many fans were upset that the Redskins did not pick a safety. However, this calmed down some after their following pick. Jordan Reed is often compared to New England TE Aaron Hernandez.   First because they both played TE at Florida but also because they were used in a similar fashion.  Reed played a H-back/TE hybrid role. He was moved around to create mismatches with the defense. But, as with all players drafted in the third round there are some knocks on Reed. Primarily, he has shown no ability to block. Also, while he compares favorably to Hernandez, he is simply not the caliber of player Hernandez is.

It appears to me that the pick was somewhat unnecessary one. It could be to find a capable replacement for Davis should this season not work out once again. It may also be that the Redskins want more than one real receiving threat at TE and do not trust Niles Paul to become that.  TE was not a priority but could have been seen as a lesser need. Overall this pick is the least impressive to me as of right now.
