Redskins Draft Recap by Pick: Philip Thomas & Chris Thompson

Round 4 (119 Overall) Phillip Thomas S - Probably one of the most widely praised pick of the Redskins. Thomas is athletic, has good ball skills, and is a strong tackler. He has the ability to play both SS and FS in the NFL. The knocks against him are small ones. He was injured in 2011 but bounced back in 2012 and looked solid. He lacks strength to get off good WR blocks and at times struggles to tackle bigger RB when helping in run support.

Overall he is a great player who could have been taken earlier. He has the ability to compete for a starting job right away especially with the state of the current Redskins Roster. Thomas was the second pick in the secondary and fits the same ball hawk mold as Amerson. He could be an immediate upgrade to a unit that was the Redskins biggest weakness last year.

Round 5 (154 Overall) Chris Thompson RB - Another later round RB for Mike Shanahan to work with. With the RB's behind Alfred Morris showing little promise and littered with injury problems the Redskins could use another reliable back. Thompson is a smaller back with good receiving skills and posses the ability to return kicks. He is a good fit as a change of pace back. However, with his smaller frame comes a history of injuries. It is good that he will not asked to be a starting RB in the NFL because he does not have the size or durability for it.

Thompson seems to have been brought in to compete withe Helu as a change of pace and receiving back. His problems with durability make him unlikely to make a long lasting impact for the Redskins but he could provide a break for Morris.
