Redskins Name Change Revisited

I have already made one post about the Redskins name change and stated how I do not really think the Redskins should change their name for various reasons. However, the debate continues and does not seem to be going away. Joe Theismann was recently interviewed by Argus Leader where he shared his thoughts on the name

“I was very proud to play for the Washington Redskins, and I did it to honor Native people in that regard. I think sometimes people perceive words in their own particular way. What happens, what Mr. Snyder (Dan Snyder, Washington’s owner) decides to do is totally up to him. I can just tell you that when I put that uniform on, and I put that helmet on with the Redskin logo on it, I felt like I was representing more than the Washington Redskins, I was representing the great Native American nations that exist in this country.”

I think Theismann’s thoughts are interesting being that it shows how the name Redskins really is not meant to be a racist name. However, I do understand that the name may be offensive and I am willing to concede that the name needs to be changed but only under the condition that the majority of Native Americans actually are offended. My worry in changing the name is that I’m not convinced it is Native Americans who want the name changed.

Possible Names:

1. Braves - This is my personal favorite because it is the Redskins original name. The name is even in the current fight song and very little would have to change

2. Skins’ - I have recently heard this name and while I understand the appeal it seems silly to me. If the name is simply changed to Skins every person that hears it will immediately think Redskins. It is like saying the “n-word” sure you aren’t saying it but you are putting the thought in everyones head.

3. Pigskins/Hogs - I don’t love these names but again I can see why some might. They aslo make sense with Redskins history.
