No, the Redskins are not going to cut Robert Griffin III but there is talk about possibly cutting Rex Grossman III. Rich Tandler of Real Redskins was the first to bring up the idea.
He states that Mike Shanahan has not always kept three quarterbacks on the roster so it is seemingly plausible that he would not this year. Instead of a third quarterback the Redskins would have room for four tight ends on the final 53 man roster. That fourth tight end being rookie Jordan Reed
Tandler's other theory is that because the Redskins brought in John Potter who is a kickoff specialist. Obviously Kai Forbath would not be cut so the Redskins would keep two kickers rather than Grossman.
I understand both of the reasons for cutting Grossman and the assumption is that this would only occur if Griffin was 100% healthy. But my big problem with this is that in Griffins first season in the NFL he already got injured two or three times depending on what you count. His injury shouldn't be a problem in the future but I don't see any reason to assume he will never be injured again.
Even if RGIII were to be injured again Cousins would be the player to step in not Grossman but my problem with this is, while I personally believe Cousins has what it takes, I don't see how anyone can be positive at this point that Cousins will be able to be a long term starter if needed. Matt Flynn is a prime example of a QB that played well in limited chances but hasn't done anything since.
Grossman knows the system extremely well and has been a quarterback for a long time. He was never the best but he has some ability to step in when needed. He has been to a superbowl and just has too much experience to give up at football's most important position.
I guess the core of the issue for me is that four tight ends and a kicker just for kickoffs seem like luxuries. Kai is a great kicker and while he could be better at kickoffs I just can't see a reason to waist a spot on a kicker over a quarterback. Jorden Reed has some talent but he seems to be a project and most likely won't make a huge contribution this year.
If the Redskins cut Grossman I won't question it and will assume Shanahan knows what he is doing. However, for now I would advise against it.
