What to watch Redskins vs Eagles

I detailed the Eagles in more detail here so this will talk more about the Redskins and less about the Eagles.

1. The safety play will be vital in this game for both run support and pass coverage. The Eagles have DeSean Jackson who is always a deep threat and LeSean McCoy who is bound to make some runs that reach the second level. Rambo struggled earlier in the preseason with tackling and taking the correct angles. He has improved but McCoy is in the same class as Chris Johnson so Rambo will really need to step up. Brandon Meriweather is still questionable for the game so if he can't go then Reed Doughty will get the start. Again Meriweather/Doughty will need to make some plays against the run.

In coverage the safeties will need to provide support. I would expect Jackson to go deep early and often while using double moves. DeAngelo Hall has struggled against double moves so the safeties may need to pick up some slack. Rambo and co. will also be asked to cover Brent Celek at time who is a solid tight end.

2. The defensive line is short handed with Jenkins suspended and Carriker hurt which will be a cause for concern against a team that has a great offensive line, mobile quarterback and top notch running back. Keeping Vick in the pocket will be key which means the defensive ends and outside linebackers will need to keep contain and avoid going too far up field. Watch for Barry Cofield to have a big game he could be the difference maker in the trenches.

3. The Redskins' pass rush has shown some new looks during the preseason including having Kerrigan and Tapp line up in the inside with the other outside linebackers on the outside. This could cause some havoc but could also create a problem if the Eagles no huddle and catch this personnel group on the field for more than a play or two. It will be the first game back for Orakpo and I'm excited if he can start his contract year out strongly.

4. RGIII is back but there are a few concerns. First, how quickly will he adjust to game speed? He didn't take any snaps in preseason and will have to get used to the speed of an NFL game quickly if he wants to succeed. Second, will he favor his knee at all? He has shown speed and the ability to drive the ball in practice but you never know for sure until game time. Finally, how will he react after that first hit? It'll probably be best if it happens early just to get it out of the way. I have often heard that the first hit settles you down. It'll probably be an emotional game for Griffin especially because he tends to be an emotional guy and getting hit early could focus him a bit.

5. The preseason is over but the battle for that #2 receiving position isn't. Josh Morgan is probably in the lead at this point but Hankerson is right behind him. It remains to be seen how either will preform this year. Watch out for Aldrick Robinson, he could be more than just a deep threat.

6. And of course drink some beer, cheer loudly, and enjoy the fact that football is finally back.
